Held in what is generally known as Cedar City, UtahThe Royal Kingdom of Himmelsk is restored each year on April 1 of the Old Norwegian calendar (which coincides to mid-April on modern calendars). During the period, Cedar City again becomes the tiny nation of Himmelsk ruled over by King Eric Blodok and Queen Clara, and the period is known as the Festival Royale. During the Festival, visitors to the Kingdom may attend a variety of events, including the fabled historical pageant, Command Performances and State Dinners, Royal Family Events such as weddings and funerals, take a tour of the monarchy and have tea with the Queen, visit the Himmelsk Museum, attend the kingdom's celebrated Smorgaluau (a culinary blend of the kingdom's traditional foods), and generally do all the things you would ordinarily do should you have been invited to break bread with other world Royalty. There is plenty of pomp and circumstance to satisfy the most ardent royalist and lots of fun for those who enjoy a good time and know the meaning of the word faux. This is the festival that made the front pages of many of America's daily newspapers a few years back and continues to be a festival of another kind, something unique for those who want a different and entertaining experience. The Festival is centered on the story of a Viking armada that set sail in the mid 900s from Norway to crisscross the world in search of new lands to conquer and new treasures to pillage. The armada unfortunately became lost and, after five years of travel, found its way to a remote Pacific island. For more than two centuries, the Vikings lived on the island until a series of events caused the island to be transported via a tidal wave to the present site of Cedar City, Utah, where the Vikings lived for nearly 700 years (making them the continent's first European settlers). The kingdom was destroyed by order of the U.S. president lest Norway lay claim to the American West. The Vikings and their king were sent into exile. As the story goes, documents were discovered several years ago that confirmed the previous existence of the kingdom, and the heirs to the Himmelsk throne sued for reinstatement resulting in a treaty signed between the U.S. and the reigning Blodoks family for the kingdom to be restored each year in April for a period not to exceed 10 days. Having been cut off from royalty for more than a century, the Blodoks have borrowed heavily from movies (The King and I, The Mouse That Roared, The Princess Bride, et al) in fashioning the modern traditions of Himmelsk, an amalgam that breeds pride in all their loyal subjects. Schedule of Events
THE HIMMELSK SAGAThe Heritage Center TheaterThe pageant traces the history of Himmelsk from the original Viking armada that set sail from Norway in 951 A.D., traveled around the Americas, and finally landed on a South Pacific Island the Norwegians labeled Himmelsk, which translates as "heavenly" in English. After several hundred years atop a submerged volcano, the island rode a tsunami (the pageant explains how) to the present site of Cedar City, where the monarchy existed for 670 years before being routed by the United States army in 1845. It's an elaborate show, complete to the concluding segment which takes place in the Himmelsk Royal Court where patrons will meet the Royal Family and be entertained by talent fit for a king. Find out the roles played in the Himmelsk Saga by such historical and contemporary figures as President James C. Polk, Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, and aviatrix Amelia Earhart. The entire history of Himmelsk is revealed in song, dance, and exceedingly rare archival materials. Hosted by Prince Knut, heir to the throne of the monarchy, you'll meet some of the famous figures who travel to Himmelsk to attend the Festival Royale including reigning royalty such as King Shrek and Queen Fiona of DuLoc and King Bradford and Queen Chloe of Prom. The pageant is presented nightly during the Festival at 7:30 p.m. 2008 Dates: April 16,17,18,19Starring

THE HERITAGE CENTER THE SMORGALUAUFestival HallThis unique buffet--which combines a Scandinavian Smorgasbord with a Polynesian Luau--unites the unique tastes and sounds of the Himmelsk heritage. A traditional Smorgasbord offers a melange of foods and dishes (as hors d'oeuvres, hot and cold meats, smoked and pickled fish, cheeses, salads, and relishes). A traditional Luau (which means feast or celebration) features Polynesian foods each of which were extremely symbolic to ancient Polynesians. The Himmelsk Smorgaluau takes the best of both culinary traditions and adds a touch of the Old West, a blending of the geographical phases of the Himmelsk people. Here you'll find Smorgasbord favorites such as ham, meatballs, small sausages, meat stuffed cabbage rolls, over-roasted pork ribs, and rice porridge with a hidden almond for luck. Among the Luau staples are poi (made from the root of the taro plant), sweet potatoes, steak, chicken and fish. Add an array of scrumptious desserts including Polynesian coconut cake, banana bread, and guava chiffon cake, and Scandinavian pastries and pies. It's a fun and delightful meal, and one never leaves still hungry. The Smorgaluau is held nightly prior to the pageant beginning at 6:00 p.m. in Festival Hall. THE HIMMELSK NATIONAL MUSEUMHeritage Theater Grand LobbyOpen only during the Festival, the National Museum features Himmelsk's unique collection of rare and one-of-a-kind items. See the original Mona Lisa (16th century painter Leonardo da Vinci's first painting of Mona had her frowning; Mona rejected it and the second, more famous version was then painted), the first aspirin tablet, and Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh's missing ear. See also alien heads from Nevada's Area 51 (found mounted on a wall in a sporting club), the original Little Orphan Annie comic strip (in which Annie has eyeballs), as well as dozens of unique and surprising items on display (all authenticated since they were purchased at great expense via eBay). There is no charge for visiting the museum although a rigorous body search may be required for security at entrance. The Museum is open daily during the Festival from 11:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. HIMMELSK TOUR AND QUEEN'S TEABegins and Ends at Heritage TheaterVisitors to Himmelsk will want to take an informative bus tour of the monarchy in which many of the kingdom's secrets are revealed. See the world's largest Valium mine, the Himmelsk lighthouse (the only remaining artifact from the nation's South Pacific era), as well as other national oddities. Following the tour, attend the Queen's High Tea hosted by the nation's Queen Mother herself and replete with tea poured from the Royal Teapot and served with Scandinavian pastries. Light entertainment is provided. The tour begins daily during the Festival at 10:30 a.m. THE HIMMELSK STATE DINNERFestival HallAs traditionally held in monarchies, the Royal Family pulls out all the stops for a gala State Dinner honoring some visiting dignitary to Himmelsk. Held with pomp and circumstance, this sit-down banquet steals appropriately the menus and recipes from the famous State Dinners of the White House. Dine on the same food items prepared for the Queen of England, the Sultan of Brunei, or the Emperor of Japan, or another celebrity honored at the White House or from special occasions honoring the President himself such as the elaborate meal presented in 1906 for President William Howard Taft to commemorate the rebirth of San Francisco following the famous earthquake. But while the Himmelsk State Dinners resemble those held in Washington, D.C., the Himmelsk version is decidedly different beginning with the entrance of the Royal Family, the strolling strings from the Himmelsk Symphony Orchestra, and the singing corporals from the Himmelsk Military Chorus. The State Dinner is held only when visiting dignitaries merit it and is presented in Cedar City's Festival Hall. It is not scheduled for 2008. ROYAL COMMAND PERFORMANCEHeritage TheaterThe Command Performance features artists personally selected by the Himmelsk King and Queen and reflective of their Royal taste. With the King and Queen in attendance in their Royal Box, it is a glittering occasion of rare (and, sometimes, disturbing) talent including comedians (clean ones as befitting a family festival), magicians, and illusionists. Not presented annually (only when the King and Queen are so inspired) but when it is, it is held in the Heritage Theater at 7:30 p.m. ROYAL FAMILY EVENTSOccasionally during the Festival's morning hours, patrons will be invited to attend Royal Family Events that in the past have included a marriage and a funeral and could in the future include baby blessings, and a form of Himmelskan coming of age ceremony (not unlike a barmitzvah or batmitzvah, but different, of course). Himmelsk marriages are joyous events which blend Scandinavian and Polynesian folk songs and dances, with High Society resplendent in shimmering garb. A Himmelsk funeral is, on the other hand, a solemn occasion in which the attributes of the deceased are recalled in a series of funeral orations designed to touch the inner you. Both occasions are presided over by Royal Comedians (clean, of course). The events are held in the morning hours, usually beginning at 10:00 a.m., and are always held in Festival Hall. None are scheduled in 2008. THE HIMMELSK PASSPORTA wonderful keepsake, an Official Passport is made available to loyal subjects who swear allegiance to the King and Queen, promise to obey Himmelsk laws including bowing and scraping to the Royal Family, have the necessary blood type (A, B, or O, or a combination thereof), and desire discounts at most of the Festival activities and preferred seating at evening performances of the Pageant or Command Performances. The passport is not offered in 2008. THE HIMMELSK EMPORIUM (STORE)Festival Hall LobbyFestival visitors will want to visit the Himmelsk Emporium where one can purchase Himmelsk T-shirts and other apparel, Viking hats, delicious home-dipped chocolates and Scandinavian pastries, and other coveted items. Also on sale: The Official Himmelsk History (lavishly illustrated). The Himmelsk Passport is honored at the Souvenir Shop. Items from the Emporium can also be purchased via this web site. Merely click on the link at the top of this page. The store is not open for 2008. 'THE ROYAL STANDARD'Published only during Festival time, The Royal Standard is Himmelsk's official newspaper, distributed free of charge to Himmelsk residents and Festival visitors. Here one learns hard news (a submarine discovered in Navajo Lake, Prince Charles and Camilla's honeymoon visit to Himmelsk, local plastic surgeons and the patients they have transformed into celebrity lookalikes), and society notes of the Royal Family and such American royalty as Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. An on-line version with up-to-date information on the Royal Family and news releases from the Himmelsk Ministry of Information can be accessed through this web site. The Standard is not published in 2008. For further information, write: The Festival Royale, 10 North Main, Cedar City, Utah 84720 or call Larry Baker, 435-865-5107.
